The last original member of the Carlton Showband has passed away.
Freddie White, the lone Canadian in the band’s original recording lineup, passed away in Ontario last weekend.
The Carlton Showband was the house band for the Pig and Whistle Show in late 60s and early 70s, and toured Newfoundland and Labrador regularly.
They were embraced by Newfoundlanders and Labradorians and have been a staple on the VOCM Irish Newfoundland Show for decades.
White, who was from from Nova Scotia, was the only Canadian in the band’s original lineup.
The Carlton Showband is perhaps best known for The Laughing Policeman, The Merry Ploughboy and their version of If Your Irish won a Juno in 1975 for Best Country Group of the Year.
