Iceberg season is off to an early start.
Barry Rogers of Iceberg Quest Ocean Tours says he’s already sending boats out with full loads of passengers from St. John’s and Twillingate.
He says in just the last few days a large iceberg showed up near Cuckhold’s Cove near Quidi Vidi, and there are “four or five” near Twillingate.
Rogers says icebergs get a lot of attention, but it can’t be forgotten that they are extremely dangerous to approach, and caution has to be taken.
He understands people are excited and want to see them close-up, but he recommends that you go with a certified operator.
He says boats need to be properly equipped with PFDs and floater suits, “you won’t last too long in the water if you capsize.”
