The Supreme Court in Happy Valley-Goose Bay is expected to remain closed until the end of the week due to a shortage of sheriff’s officers.
Earlier this week, officers were moved from the court into “another jurisdiction” while the province works through shortages.
Minister Helen Conway Ottenheimer says the closure “did not affect any trials,” and she is not aware of any other delays.
Conway Ottenheimer says the budget has set aside funds to address the issue.
“In the budget last week that we had 8.3 million dollars allocated for court operations. That’s a significant investment. Perhaps I could even say it’s historic. We really haven’t seen that type of investment in our courts when we have seven additional provincial court judges.”
Meanwhile, the provincial court in Wabush is also closed to the public this week.
The reason why is not immediately clear.
