Fire caused extensive damage to a large commercial building on Shaw Street over the supper hour yesterday.
The building, owned by Smith Stockley, contained several operations including the Geraldine Rubia Centre and a warehouse for plumbing supplies and vehicles.
St. John’s Regional Fire Department Platoon Chief Ed Sears says the call came in at 4:57 from a tenant who was outside and saw smoke coming from the roof. Firefighters arrived to see smoke and fire in the roof and overhead door. They got in through the side of the building and extinguished the blaze but not before it destroyed at least one of Smith Stockley’s delivery vehicles.
The Rubia Centre, which is in the front of the building, incurred smoke damage and is closed until further notice.
There was nobody in the building at the time.
RNC is investigating the cause.
