St. John’s International Airport has become somewhat of the lifeboat of the North Atlantic for air traffic needing to divert due to an emergency.
Forty planes diverted to YYT in 2025 according to stats laid out by the airport authority during this week’s AGM.
CEO Dennis Hogan says St. John’s is usually the preferred airport for transatlantic flights in need of assistance.
He says most of the time, YYT is the closest stop for flights going across the pond. St. John’s is also better equipped to handle things like medical emergencies, unruly passengers and mechanical issues in comparison to other airports.
Hogan says most unexpected stops are due to medical emergencies which are accommodated by the airport and NL Health Services.
