A collection of recreational fishing enthusiasts lobbying to expand the opportunities to catch a cod is happy with what they heard on Friday regarding the new rules, but it does have some concerns and is still working through the details.
Fisheries Minister Joanne Thompson announced yesterday that the recreational fishery from southern Labrador to the southern Avalon would be open seven days a week from Canada Day to Labour Day, but that the west and south coasts would still be relegated to a weekend-only fishery. That’s because the stock is not as healthy as that in 2J3KL.
Committee chair Barry Fordham says they are pleased to see some progress.
“We realize that the cod stocks aren’t as strong on the west and south coasts, so we are going to take it as a win. However, we are also going to engage the membership throughout the province to gather feedback to guide our advocacy efforts,” said Fordham.
