The NDP is calling on the provincial government to provide adequate funding to help preserve heritage buildings.
The MHA for St. John’s East-Quidi Vidi, Sheilagh O’Leary, says a number of concerns have been highlighted in recent weeks, not only in her own district but in Harbour Grace as well.
She says historians, folklorists and community members are calling on government to do more to help protect and preserve heritage structures.
She says the province currently provides just $150,000 annually in grants for heritage buildings, leaving “very little support” for restoration of buildings that need significant work.
She raised the matter in the House of Assembly this week.
Tourism Minister Andrea Barbour says two separate pots of funding are available, one for private heritage home owners and the other for historic sites and properties.
