The Innu Development Corporation has withdrawn from the upcoming Expo Labrador, pending the outcome of discussions with Premier Tony Wakeham.
Last week, the Innu Nation cancelled plans for an exhibit at The Rooms.
They say they were told by the museum that the exhibit had to support “the province’s own controversial theory of Innu history,” and not what they say is the accepted academic consensus of the Innu timeline in Labrador.
The corporation says “recent actions” by the province have raised “serious concerns regarding the province’s recognition and treatment of Innu history and rights,” noting that the relationship between the Innu and the province has been affected as a result.
CEO Gregory Rich says they cannot separate their business interests from “the rights and interests of the people (they) serve,” and they hope conversations with the premier will result in “meaningful action” that will restore confidence in their relationship.
