It was an unusual sight in Gander on Friday as an Etihad Airways Airbus A380 made an unexpected landing due to a medical emergency.
The plane, en route to Abu Dhabi from Toronto, was just about four hours into its transatlantic flight when it had to turn around and land at Gander International Airport; the only airport large enough on the east coast of Canada to support a jet airliner of that magnitude.
Emergency medical staff met the plane on the runway to transport the patient to hospital. The plane refueled, and after nearly two hours, took off for its final destination.
