St. John’s actor, comedian, and staple of the arts community, Andy Jones was among 39 people invested into the Order of Canada today in Ottawa.
Jones stood before Governor General Julie Payette, as his contributions to the preservation of Newfoundland traditional arts, as well as his own work, were honoured.

Jones is a two-time Gemini Award winner, and has been given an ACTRA lifetime achievement award. He is also well known for his role with the Codco comedy troupe, and has authored several children’s books.
He says Newfoundland has always been a fertile ground for artistic inspiration and counts himself as lucky to have been born and raised here.

Jones says it’s great recognition for artists, like himself, who work independently for their whole career. He jokes that it’s nice to get a bit of encouragement “for what you’re at, as it gets pretty discouraging sometimes to be in the arts.”
In addition, other high-profile actors were honoured including Star Trek star William Shatner and film actor Donald Sutherland.
Payette presided over the ceremony at Rideau Hall in Ottawa. The order was established in 1967.
