The province’s energy minister says an agreement reached with Quebec on hydro development is not just about getting a better deal than the original 1969 Upper Churchill contract, it’s also about the benefits that will come, not just to Labrador, but the entire province.
Lloyd Parrott says it was all part of the consideration that government has given to accepting the new deal.

“This deal is as much about upgrading Churchill Falls (and) developing a new resource, as it is about building a new economy.”
He cites a number of the benefits that the deal could have for Labrador in particular. “We took into consideration Labrador West, the Labrador Trough, our mining operations up around Schefferville, defense, investments that we’re going to have in Goose Bay, and how much communities like Labrador City, Wabush, Goose Bay, the coast of Labrador were being left behind.”
