Billowing smoke and a large response from St. John’s Regional Fire Department caused quite a scene on Queen’s Road early Saturday evening.

At about 5:15 p.m., fire crews from Central Fire Station were called to what was initially believed to be a garbage fire behind some homes on Garrison Hill. Upon arrival they discovered dense smoke billowing from the chimney of the former Cathedral Parish Hall on Queen’s Road.
As smoke was also rising from the roof around the chimney, additional fire crews were dispatched.

Firefighters used an aerial ladder to access the roof at the rear of the building, which is nearly 130 years old. It was determined that a furnace—which hadn’t been running in several months—was the cause of the smoke. The machinery was shut down to be reviewed by maintenance personnel.
Queen’s Road was closed between Garrison Hill and Long’s Hill while crews worked.
