The Conservative MP for the Eastern Peninsulas has written to Premier Tony Wakeham, asking him to reconsider his decision not to hold a public referendum on the Churchill Falls agreement.
Jonathan Rowe claims he wrote the Premier as a “concerned citizen.”
He says Wakeham made a “clear commitment” to the people of Newfoundland and Labrador that they would have the “final say trough a referendum.”
Rowe says that commitment was not only an election promise, but a “cornerstone” of the PC campaign.
In a letter to Wakeham posted to his Facebook page, Rowe says the premier holds a position of “tremendous public trust,” and with that comes an obligation to demonstrate “integrity, accountability and respect” for the people who elected him.
Rowe says he understands circumstances can change, but the question many want answered is, “What changed?”
He wonders whether the decision not to hold a referendum was made entirely by Wakeham’s government or by “outside influences, pressures and/or demands.”
