There was a standing ovation in the House of Assembly yesterday as members recognized the life and service of the late Chief Justice and former legislator Leo Barry, who passed away this week at the age of 83.
Premier Tony Wakeham says Barry “contributed greatly to Newfoundland and Labrador through law, public service and politics.”
“Born in Red Island, Placentia Bay, Leo Barry built an extraordinary career dedicated to serving the people of our province. Before his appointment to the bench, he served in the House of Assembly as both a government member and as Leader of the Opposition. Throughout his political career, he brought intelligence, conviction and principled leadership to public life.”
The Liberals and NDP also recognized Barry for his dedicated service to the province.
Barry’s partner, Jan Peters, and his daughter Dianna Barry were in the public gallery for yesterday’s tribute.
