The federal government has opened up public consultations as it considers the possibility of adding 12 Atlantic salmon populations to the Species at Risk Act.
That includes three populations in this province – two on the island’s south coast and one in southeastern Labrador.
Federal Fisheries Minister Joanne Thompson says government is seeking direction on how to better “protect and conserve” salmon for the long-term.
“I’m pleased that we have some funding for this, so we will work alongside community members who are on the rivers and understand what’s happening in their area,” said the minister.
Consultations are open via the Species at Risk Public Registry until January 29th.
The list of affected areas includes:
- Atlantic salmon (Anticosti Island population)
- Atlantic salmon (Gaspé Peninsula population)
- Atlantic salmon (Inner St. Lawrence population)
- Atlantic salmon (Nova Scotia Southern Upland East population)
- Atlantic salmon (Nova Scotia Southern Upland West population)
- Atlantic salmon (Outer Bay of Fundy population)
- Atlantic salmon (Quebec Eastern North Shore population)
- Atlantic salmon (Quebec Western North Shore population)
- Atlantic salmon (South Newfoundland West population)
- Atlantic salmon (South Newfoundland East population)
- Atlantic salmon (Southern Gulf of St. Lawrence and Cape Breton population)
- Atlantic salmon (Southern Labrador population)
