Folks on the Avalon Peninsula were treated to an unusual celestial sight today, as the sun put on a show with its very own halo.

Jeremy Morgan snapped a few photos from his patio in Bay Roberts after he witnessed the halo appear in the air at around 1:00, Friday afternoon.

The phenomenon is also known as a 22° halo, which is formed when light from the sun or moon refracts through hexagonal ice crystals hanging in the atmosphere.

It earns its name as the light forms a ring with a radius of about 22° around the sun.

Those ice crystals appear when the sky is covered with thin cirrus or cirrostratus clouds.
