The official opposition is urging the provincial government to implement recommendations from the Newfoundland and Labrador Medical Association on a shortage of family doctors, which they say has reached “crisis” levels.
Yesterday, the NLMA released a report which says we need another 243 family doctors in the province over the next 10 years, including the immediate need for 60 full-time physicians.
PC Leader Ches Crosbie says they have constantly been hearing about how serious the issue is from the public, something which he says is affirmed by the numbers released by the association.
Earlier this year, the association reported the number of people in the province without a family doctor has doubled in recent years to 99,000.
The PCs are urging the province to implement the recommendations “without delay.”
