The deluge has been contained, but a break in a flume caused some significant damage this morning on Topsail Road in CBS near the Paradise border.
Water was shooting dozens of feet into the air on Topsail Road across from the Woodstock Colonial Inn this morning.
The water has been stemmed for the time being and CBS town officials and Newfoundland Power are on the scene assessing the situation.
The water has caused damage to the road, and local properties, including a retaining wall and a driveway.
The cause of the torrent is under investigation but appears to be related to ongoing work on a dam in the area.
Newfoundland Power says it had been working on it’s Hydroelectric Plant penstock. Repairs were completed and another penstock was being put back into service when another section of the penstock broke.
Newfoundland Power says the plant was immediately shut down and the water has been stopped. Newfoundland Power employees and CBS town officials are assessing the damage and preparing the make the necessary repairs.
