Canada is still facing a shortage of organs for transplant.
That’s according to the latest statistics released by the Canadian Institute for Health Information.
Manager of Acute Care and Ambulatory Services with CIHI Juliana Wu says there were over 4,000 people across Canada on the waiting list for organ transplants at the end of 2018.
She says although over 3,000 people underwent life-saving transplant surgery in 2018, with many more still waiting on the list, there’s still need for improvement.
Over 200 people died in that same time frame waiting for a transplant. Wu is encouraging Canadians to think about their wishes when it comes to organ donation and share it with their families.
