The Museum Association of Newfoundland and Labrador is taking measures to ensure that it be recognized for its role in promoting tourism in the province.
Museums are mandated to preserve culture and heritage, but until now, have seldom been acknowledged when it comes to economic development.
The provincial government’s Cultural Action Plan, released at the same time as the spring provincial budget, outlined some of those goals.
Statistics show that $1.2-million was spent in provincial museums in 2015. That does not include the spin-off benefits.
President of the Museum Association, Teresita McCarthy says a little over 70 per cent of visitors to the province, visit museums.
She says museums are an economic driver and often the anchor attraction in some communities when it comes to tourism.
Executive Director Ken Flynn says it’s time to acknowledge the role museums play in the province’s growing tourism industry.
He says museums are switching gears and becoming more involved in the tourism industry.
