St. John’s native Alex Newhook is among the nine players cut from Canada’s world junior selection camp. The Colorado Avalanche first-round pick was released yesterday, but he will have a shot at making the team again next year.
He says he came in with high hopes and was proud of the way he played at camp. At the end of the day, Newhook says it’s something he can’t control, so he will take what he can and move on.
Meanwhile, 18-year-old Bay Roberts native Dawson Mercer has been kept on the roster, which will be cut by one more player before the tournament kicks off on Boxing Day.
Mercer plays in the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League’s Drummondville Voltigeurs.
