Even though fewer people indicate they’ll be attending Christmas church services, a majority of Canadians asked still long for a time when the Christmas holiday was simpler and less commercialized.
Angus Reid has released its latest survey, asking Canadians about Christmas and what it means to them.
89 per cent of respondents say they’ll get together with family for dinner, 77 per cent will put up a tree, and 57 per cent will hang stockings.
31 years ago, 27 per cent of Canadians asked said Christmas was primarily a religious celebration, while just 10 per cent of respondents say the same today.
Nostalgia however remains high. 69 per cent of those surveyed say Christmas has lost some of its real meaning, very similar to the percentage of people who held that view (65 per cent) nearly 70 years ago.
Meanwhile, while one quarter of Canadians adults asked indicate that are not looking forward to Christmas, three-quarters say that are at least a little excited for the holiday.
