A family in Newfoundland is fundraising money for a surgery in the United States for their three-year-old daughter.
Paige Brushett was born with Congenital Melanocytic Nevus (CMN), a rare condition that affects one in every 500,000 births world-wide.
After years of contacting doctors across the county, her mother, Stephanie Brushett, thought surgical removal would not be possible until Paige was in her teens.
That was until she saw another Canadian on Facebook take her daughter to a world-class surgeon in Chicago, Dr. Bruce Bauer.
Brushett says she thought the cost for the surgery would be in the hundreds of thousands but when she heard it would be $40,000, she almost cried because she really started to believe they had finally found the answer.
Dr. Bauer has performed thousands of removal surgeries for CMN, something Burshett says is an impressive amount due to the rarity of the condition.
But because the surgery is in the United States, the cost will not be covered by their healthcare.
Although the family may be able to secure accommodations in Chicago, travel and other living expenses might not be covered.
