The Newfoundland and Labrador Association of Public and Private Employees is concerned about the province’s growing deficit.
Both the province’s Fall Fiscal Update and the Auditor General’s latest report point to a troubling fiscal situation facing the province.
The deficit has grown substantially, prompting calls to rein in spending.
NAPE President Jerry Earle says an agreement to extend the contracts for many bargaining units for another two years is part of the union’s efforts to help keep spending in check and stabilize the economy.
NAPE represents some 18,000 public sector workers, all of whom contribute to the economy, says Earle.
Earle added most of them spend their money locally, and knowing that their salaries won’t roll back and that their jobs are safe will help restore confidence.
