Crews with the City of St. John’s will be busy widening streets and removing snow from the downtown tonight before switching back into storm mode tomorrow.
LynnAnn Winsor, the city’s Deputy Manager of Public Works, gave an update on snow clearing operations earlier today.
According to Winsor, staff have been working “around the clock” since the initial Christmas Eve storm—typically working 12-hour shifts.

City staff had a break from the snow on Tuesday, and were able to branch out and do some street-widening and other snow removal operations. However, they will be required to refocus their attention with Wednesday’s impending weather.
They’ll be forced to switch gears and begin salting and plowing once more. They work towards beginning street-widening and pushback about 24 hours after a storm ends, before moving on to snow removal.

Winsor notes the city needs a few days of good weather to complete snow removal efforts.
That doesn’t just mean an absence of snowfall—they also need favourable conditions in which crews aren’t required to be constantly salting the roads as well.
