The first big snow storm of 2020 left piles of snow around the metro region, much to the delight of kids.
However, while some children have been tunneling through the snow mounds, the St. John’s Regional Fire Department is offering a warning of the many dangers.
Platoon Chief Paul Chaytor says with heavy equipment working around the city, the clearing of fire hydrants and cars creeping out into intersections to see around corners, their worry is that a child will end up getting buried in snow, or hit by a car.
Chaytor says parents should be supervising their kids and making sure it is a safe environment if they choose to play in the massive snow piles.
He says there are dangers of suffocation, and with the significant snowfall, the weight of the snow could crush a small child’s lungs to the point where they can’t breathe.
Chaytor says he hopes kids have fun; he just wants them to play safe.
