The storm and subsequent state of emergency have uncovered a poverty crisis that already existed in our community.
That’s according Louise Moyse and Renee Hackett, two of many who organized food deliveries during the shutdown for those in need.
They say poverty and the opioid crisis left many neighbourhoods unable to cope with the state of emergency on their own.

Hackett says one woman they helped was in need of food, despite running a soup kitchen out of her home for others all week. She was moved, saying a couple living in a basement apartment provide other homes nearby with food, despite having very little themselves.
Hackett says especially over the last week, with people in withdrawal, without their cheques or transportation, or simply too proud to ask, there was great need that needs to be addressed.
