People in the food and beverage industry are looking for a few breaks from government in the aftermath of Snowmageddon.
Luke Erjavec, vice-president Atlantic division of Restaurants Canada, says the blizzard has exacerbated an already challenging year with Newfoundland and Labrador’s economy lagging behind others in Canada.
There are over 1,200 licensed bars and restaurants in this province, employing over 16,000 people.
They’re asking government to sell alcohol to bars and restaurants at wholesale prices instead of regular prices, and they want the minimum wage tied to the national consumer price index.
Erjavec would also like to see businesses exempt from the 15 per cent retail sales tax on insurance premiums. He says they just want barriers eliminated where they are not competitive with the rest of Canada and even Atlantic Canada.
