The Department of Health and Community Services says new screening protocols have been implemented in light of the outbreak of novel coronavirus originating in China.
However, officials maintain that the local risk remains quite low.
Ten airports across the country have implemented new screening efforts, specifically focusing on people who have recently visited China before returning to Canada.
Anyone who visited the Hubei province of China within two weeks of returning to Canada is asked to self-isolate and monitor their vitals. Likewise, anyone who has visited any other area of China within two weeks of returning is asked to closely monitor their health.
People who meet the aforementioned criteria will be asked questions about their health by border service agents, and will be provided with information about symptoms and self-isolation if applicable.
To date there have been no cases of coronavirus in Newfoundland and Labrador, and the Department of Health and Community Services says the local risk remains small.
However, as is the case with many respiratory illnesses the best defense is properly washing your hands. Otherwise, prevent the spread of illness by practicing proper coughing and sneezing etiquette, and stay home if you’re sick.
