Members of the Canadian Union of Postal Workers rallied outside Canada Post over the lunch hour over the use of temporary workers.
Canada Post employees are fed up with the lack of full time jobs being offered to temporary workers.
Full time, part time and temporary workers gathered outside of Canada Post on Kenmount Road, calling for better-paying jobs with benefits.
Temporary workers say they make seven dollars less for the same work, and that many will remain as temporary employees for up to 10 years.
One employee, Amanda Kirby says Snowmageddon was a “wake-up call” because temporary workers did not receive compensation.
They say they will continue to worker towards better jobs, but for now, they say the next move lies with Canada post.
Craig Dyer, the Chief Shop Steward for CUPW in Newfoundland and Labrador says the issues at hand are not news to them as they have been happening for years.
He says there are positions to fill but they continue to delete them or transfer them, leaving workers in temporary jobs for up to eight years.
He says it is coincidental that they have been without a contract for two years so while there is no real press to hire for the open positions. Dyer explains that one of the biggest issues is staffing and they continue to sit down at the negotiating table for that.
Dyer says workers want permanent full time jobs but the corporation isn’t promoting anyone.
