“No ice is safe ice.” That was the message from a staged rescue operation at Worlsey Park in CBS yesterday.
Officials from the CBS Fire Department and the Rovers Ground Search and Rescue demonstrated the rescue of an ATV driver who had fallen through the ice—an event organized by the Town of CBS.
Paul French of the Rovers Ground Search and Rescue Unit provided an update on ice conditions for the Avalon region during the exercise.
He says what looks solid ice can be deceiving.
French tells VOCM News that ice cover can be sporadic. At Worsley Park yesterday the ice appeared to be quite thick, but drone footage showed that the ice sheet was broken in many places into separate slabs of ice.
Rick Noseworthy of the Avalon T’Railway Corporation says the timing of the staged rescue couldn’t be better.
He says conditions will only get worse as the temperature starts to rise.
