A person whose commercial office is in the area of Rawlins Cross has a big problem with the current circular design.
Anne Whelan, owner of Seafair Capital at the corner of Rennies Mill and Military, says her employees have a very difficult time using the crosswalk on Rennies Mill as vehicles no longer have to stop.
Previously, they were not permitted to turn right on the red, but the lights were removed when the straight stretch was eliminated in favour of the temporary traffic circle.
St. John’s City Council will soon vote on whether to make the circle permanent, and it will be a close vote.
At yesterday’s committee of the whole meeting, five wished to return to the original design, four were in favour of the current one and two members were absent.
It’s not driver error, Whelan says it’s just that drivers are unable to see the pedestrian.
She saw a woman who jumped out of the way in time but dropped her computer. It was crushed by the car. Whelan herself has been touched by at least four vehicles in broad daylight.
