PC Leader Ches Crosbie says the time and attention government spent “talking up” the fact that the Muskrat Falls Report has been sent to police and they would investigate, could complicate any possible criminal proceedings.
Crosbie says the issue is being raised in the community by law professors and well-known defense lawyers.
He says that gives any defendants reason to make motions to have charges dismissed on the basis that having being talked about by top figures of government, they are now prejudiced in getting a full and fair trial.
However, Natural Resources Minister Siobhan Coady disagrees.
She says they were advised that there was enough in the report to warrant sending it to police, and they will do their investigations and review the report.
Coady was firm that there is nothing wrong with telling people they would turn it over to police.
She says all they said was that they were referring it to the police, and they will be making the determination on criminal activity.
