This would have been an exceptionally busy weekend for Marine Atlantic but instead, the ferries are tied up because of high winds. Compounding matters is COVID-19 protocol which has resulted in the outright closure of the terminals in Port aux Basques and North Sydney.
The high winds could not have come at a worse time for Marine Atlantic with many Newfoundlanders and Labradorians trying to get back from the United States.
Darrell Mercer says missing a couple of crossings would not pose any significant problems but missing 2.5 days worth is another matter.
He says customers will not be permitted to enter either terminal. They will be booked on future crossings. As well, the corporation will be bringing in the MV Leif Ericson when operations resume Sunday night to help clear the backlog.
