The provincial government has now banned all gatherings over 10 people, including funerals, wakes and weddings.
Chief Medical Officer Dr. Janice Fitzgerald laid out more regulations on Monday and ordered more businesses to close.
That includes personal service establishments like spas, tattoo shops and hair salons. In addition, non-essential retail stores must close. Visitation to personal care homes has also been halted.
She adds that visitation to personal care homes is prohibited excluding exceptional circumstances, like end of life.
Premier Dwight Ball says they recognize family visits provide an important social connection and improvements for quality of life for residents and their families.
He says they understand it could impact weddings, but they’re putting these restrictions in place so people can have a “life ever after.”
As for funerals, they are now limited to ten family members only. Ball says they know it’s difficult but they know how people react differently in funeral settings.
Premier Baffled by Those not Adhering to Rules
Meanwhile, Premier Ball didn’t hold back when sharing his thoughts on those who are not adhering to the rules of social distancing and self-isolation.
The Premier says it “baffles” him that they are still hearing stories of people getting off planes and not going straight home but to coffee shops and grocery stores.
He says if you are doing this, you’re being completely irresponsible, putting peoples lives at risk and your own life at risk.
Ball says this is not a cautious yellow light, it’s a bright red light.
If you know of a person or business who is not following the Public Health Emergency order, there is an online public report form available.
He says they’ve had many reports already come in.
Ball says it is fair to say that some people will be receiving a call from law enforcement. They may sound like alarmists, but it’s extremely serious. He says they’re not talking about just containing the spread, as it could mean the life of a loved one.
