The owner of a convenience store in Central Newfoundland is concerned that he has to foot the entire bill for lottery tickets, even though he’s unable to sell them.
Allan Kelso, owner of A&B Variety in Norris Arm, agrees with the government’s decision to shut down in-store lotto activity but does not agree with Atlantic Lottery Corporation’s response. Stores make a five per cent commission on those types of products but have to carry thousands of dollars in inventory. Kelso says that’s tough for a small business. He feels the corporation, which gets a 95 per cent commission, should take the hit.
He says the corporation not covering the cost is like him selling a ticket and not paying the winner until a couple of months later.
