Questions are already being raised about the long-term impact of federal economic packages designed to help Canadians through the current COVID crisis.
Parliament held a historic Easter weekend sitting on Saturday to unanimously pass the federal government’s Canada Emergency Wage Program. The $73-billion emergency wage subsidy is designed to allow businesses to keep employees on the payroll and the money should start flowing in the next couple of weeks.
The federal government is facing a $184-billion deficit, and political analyst, Tim Powers says while many agree something needs to be done, he expects debate will soon heat up about how Canadians will pay that deficit back.
Meanwhile, Powers says questions are also being asked about the CERB (Canada Emergency Response Benefit), including who got it, who was entitled to it, and who got it in error.
