It was 108 years ago today that the “unsinkable” Titanic sank off the coast of Newfoundland after striking an iceberg.
It took two years to build the world’s largest passenger ship of its time. More than 1,500 of the 2,240 people on board lost their lives.

A subsequent inquiry resulted in major improvements to the shipping industry, particularly on the number of lifeboats required. The Titanic was desperately short of lifeboats.
The distress call was received by the lighthouse at Cape Race on the southern Avalon and relayed to ships in the region.
Normally, one could visit The Rooms archive on the Titanic, but today it’s a virtual display.
