A local textile artist is on the lookout for looms.
Jessica McDonald is researching the history of weaving in the province. It’s an art form that really picked up at the start of the last century with the formation of cottage industries through the Grenfell Foundation and collectives like the Jubilee Guild.
McDonald, a self-described weaving enthusiast is trying to track down looms—the technology used to create fabric—and the people who know how to use them.
She’d even like to speak to someone who knew someone who could weave. She’s asking people to also be on the lookout for old looms, which may consist of nothing more than sticks that come together in a big puzzle to form a loom.
She encourages anyone with information to contact the Weavers and Spinners of Newfoundland Facebook page, or to contact her by email.
