The federal government is banning the trade of hundreds of types of guns.
Some 1,500 “assault-style” guns are included in Ottawa’s gun control legislation, announced today. The models represent nine categories of firearms, and two types that the government identifies by characteristic.
The categories include variants of the SG-550 rifle SG-551 carbine, as well as other firearms like the M16, AR-10, AR-15 rifles, M4 carbine, and any variants or modified versions.
Effective immediately, the newly-prohibited firearms may not be used, sold, or imported. Owners of said firearms must continue to safely store them.
There will be a transition period of two years, in which owners of the prohibited firearms must take steps to comply with the new legislation.
Government says it intends to implement a buy-back program as soon as possible.
Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and Minister of Public Safety and Emergency Preparedness Bill Blair say the militarization of society has to stop, and gun control is one of the ways to do it.
They pointed to several massacres in our country, including the shooting deaths of 22 people in Nova Scotia two weekends ago.
Trudeau says assault-style weapons were meant to kill many people in a short amount of time, stating that “you don’t need an AR-15 to bring down a deer.”
