The province has two new confirmed cases of COVID-19—both in the Eastern Health region.
One case is connected to the Kearl Lake outbreak in Alberta, while the second is still under investigation, but is not related to the recent possible exposure at the Health Sciences Centre.
Over 100 staff at the hospital are in self-isolation after coming into contact with a patient who tested positive after being considered recovered.
The two new cases are the first reported in the province in nearly a week.
That’s not unexpected—according to Dr. Janice Fitzgerald, the province’s Chief Medical Officer of Health—as public health measures continue to ease.
That brings the total number of cases in the province to 261. Of those, 244 have recovered, while 9,458 people have been tested.
Dr. Fitzgerald says public health officials are also aware of an outbreak of the virus at the Richardson workcamp at the Horizons worksite in Alberta.
Newfoundlanders and Labradorians who work at that site are asked to self-isolate on immediate arrival back home, and to contact 811 for appropriate follow-up. Close family contacts will also be required to self-isolate.
