The triple crown of regattas on the Avalon Peninsula will sit the year out.
St. John’s was first off the mark last week followed by Harbour Grace and now Placentia.
That means all associated events will also be scrubbed.
Earlier Story
The list of cancelled events due to COVID-19 continues to grow with the addition of the Harbour Grace Regatta.
It marks the first time since WWII that the Harbour Grace Regatta has been cancelled.
In a post to Facebook late last week, the Harbour Grace Regatta Committee officially announced the cancellation of their 2020 event.
Last Thursday, the Royal St. John’s Regatta was also cancelled for the first time in 80 years.
The Committee says this was already going to be a tough year in Harbour Grace without long-time president Bud Chafe, but they are committed to the continuation of the second-longest sporting event in North America—resuming next year.
Regatta Day Holiday
Meanwhile, the Regatta Day holiday in St. John’s – usually on Wednesday – will likely fall on Monday.
Council has not officially ratified the change but is expected to at the next meeting in a couple of weeks.
