The Red Cross has stepped in to help three people who were displaced from their homes following fires over the holiday weekend. However, there were some adjustments made due to COVID-19.
Normally, Red Cross volunteers would provide in-person support, but due to physical distancing requirements and other public health measures, volunteers provided support remotely. They spoke with those in need by phone and using virtual means to arrange lodging and money transfers to cover food and clothing needs.
Fire crews were called to the scene of a six-unit townhouse on Barachois Street at around 1:00 p.m. on Sunday.
A 30-year-old man was taken to hospital for burns and smoke inhalation. Canadian Red Cross volunteers arranged emergency housing, food, and clothing for the man, who was released from hospital on Monday.
As well, they arranged emergency housing, food, clothing, and other basics for a woman and man who were also displaced earlier on Sunday after fire damaged their half of a duplex on Fahey Street in Kilbride.
