Students at Memorial University are playing the stock market in real time.
There are nine Bloomberg terminals in the White Trading Lab at the Faculty of Business Administration. Students spend time studying the market and prospective companies before investing.
Bloomberg has recognized the business faculty as an Experiential Learning Partner. The terminals, donated by Bloomberg New York, can be used by any student, staff or faculty member.
Dr. Erin Oldford, assistant professor of finance at MUN, is the one who ultimately decides on where to put their money.
The program began last October and by early winter, they were ready to invest. The fund has gained about four per cent since. Annually, that works out to about 24 per cent.
She says they are doing pretty well but she is hesitant to expect that on an annual basis as 24 per cent is quite remarkable.
