A member of the 1985, record-breaking Outer Cove Regatta Ford intermediate crew can still remember the race well – and its intensity.
Three new inductees were entered into the Royal St. John’s Regatta Hall of Fame at a ceremony at City Hall yesterday.
The 1985 Outer Cove Regatta Ford intermediate crew, Francis (Frank) Dinn as a builder, and Graham Roche as a coxswain are the newest members.
Patrick Hyde was a member of that team, and says it was his first time seeing some of his teammates in 35 years. He can still recall the intensity of the competition.
Hyde says it was a fantastic group of guys. The competition was great and always fair. He says they hated their opponents, and vice-versa, but it was all in good sportsmanship.
Hyde says it’s a great feeling to be inducted along with so many great names.
He says it’s a huge accomplishment as the Regatta has been around for 200 years, and they are one of just 23 crews honoured for their accomplishment when there are over 100 crews each year.
Meanwhile, the President of the Royal St. John’s Regatta Committe says the Hall of Fame ceremony is an opportunity to look at their past, and celebrate the accomplishments of both former and current participants.
Chris Neary says the inductees were easy choices.
He says the ceremony is a way to say thank them for the great work they have done.
