This is a big sporting weekend in Trinity-Conception.
Cricket is returning to Harbour Grace today with the town’s first cricket match in 85 years.
Local historian Pat Collins says cricket was once a very big deal in Harbour Grace.
He says the town had two teams one time that regularly played other teams in the Conception Bay region and St. John’s. The strongest player to come out of the town was Jack Shannon Munn who also played with Oxford.
Cricket NL will play a match in the historic town this afternoon from 2:00 to 5:00 at St. Francis Field in Harbour Grace.
Meanwhile, the World Cup of Tiddly is underway in neighbouring Carbonear.
Tiddly, once popular in outports throughout Newfoundland, had died out for the most-part, but Carbonear has been keeping the tradition alive with an annual match.
The game involves a stick, a brick and a bat.
The 12th Annual World Cup gets underway this afternoon at 2:00 at the Carbonear Recreation Complex.
