A bonfire on Ragged Beach scheduled for today by concerned citizens of Witless Bay has been postponed due to the presence of puffins.
Fledgling season is upon the puffins, where baby puffins, also known as pufflings, begin to fly and sometimes get confused by lights and end up in the town.
Lorna Yard, a resident of Witless Bay, took to social media to invite the public to the bonfire that would “take back the beach in a symbolic way.”
Residents of Witless Bay involved with the group called “Ragged Beach Newsline” had a busy week after locals approached contractors working on the beach putting up what they are calling a barricade.
Locals did not buy that and are concerned about possible development of the site which includes the entrance to a part of the East Coast Trail.
Residents took to Facebook and Twitter letting the public know the bonfire will take place, just at a later date that is yet to be announced.
Hey folks – yesterday I floated the idea of community bonfire this weekend at Ragged Beach. On reflection this morning I realized we’re close to puffin fledgling season. Some are probably leaving now so lighting up the beach would not be a good idea. We will reschedule!
