The City of St. John’s is responding to concerns raised about city sponsorships with corporations.
The conversation started following the announcement of a partnership with Canadian Tire Jumpstart Charities to construct a universally accessible playground in Mundy Pond Park.
The mayor of St. John’s, Danny Breen, says corporate sponsorships are part of what makes so many developments possible. He points to Bannerman Park, Bowring Park and Victoria Park as areas in which corporate and community sponsorships have played a big role.
Concerns were raised that the playground, in the shape of a giant Canadian Tire logo and featuring dozens of other smaller logos, was advertising masquerading as public space, but Breen is not too worried.
Unless you are flying over it, he says you won’t even know it’s there because the playground is build on top of it.
