The Mayor of Wabush says he is astounded by Transport Canada’s decision to pull fire services from the local airport effective tomorrow.
Ron Barron says the service will be downloaded onto the local town council.
He says the local fire department is not trained for that type of service and the liabilities that come with it.
Transport Canada says the airport needs some 180,000 people passing through each year in order to justify the service, but Barron says they’re using old numbers that just shouldn’t apply.
He says they’re based on a time when the region suffered two mine closures.
Area MHA Jordan Brown says airport firefighters received their two-week notice, and are out of jobs as of the end of the day.
