The NDP is calling on Ottawa to ban the practice, but Bruce Winder says he doesn’t believe retailers would be “dumb enough” to use it.

That’s because the “blowback would be fierce and massive from consumers. It is happening a little bit in the U.S. There was a situation, at least there’s allegations of Instacart in the U.S. testing algorithmic pricing in a certain way, and that created a massive uproar in the U.S., from governments as well. But I don’t think any Canadian companies would do it, because it’s just too risky from a brand and reputation perspective.”

The Competition Bureau of Canada says as of last year, more than 60 companies in Canada were offering services that use algorithms and claim to help companies optimize pricing.

The fiery collision that took 25-year-old Nicholas Fong’s life happened on March 19th, 2024.

Fong was driving along the Veteran’s Memorial near Harbour Grace when a truck driven by Jonathan Patten, who is now 29, crossed the centre line, colliding with him head-on.

According to the RCMP, Patten had “numerous illicit impairing drugs” in his system at the time.

The man plead guilty to the charge of impaired driving causing death last September.

In Harbour Grace Provincial Court on Thursday, Judge Mark Pike said that the impacts of the offence were evident to him after hearing victim impact statements.

He also acknowledged that Patten has shown remorse for his actions and has made “commendable efforts” to rehabilitate.

Patten has been sentenced to three years in jail followed by a three-year driving prohibition.

Police say someone broke into Lourdes Superette just before 2:00 Tuesday morning.

They say the culprit disabled the power and security equipment, accessed a safe inside the business and left with lottery and tobacco products. The suspect fled on foot, heading west.

The total cost of the stolen items and damage to the building is believed to be around $4,000.

People in the area are being asked to review security footage from the area between 1:00 and 3:00 a.m. on the day in question, and to report anything suspicious to police.

There are two issues that Henry House wants to see addressed.

He explains that when a physician has concerns that a patient is developing a dependance on a medication they enter into an “informal agreement” where the patient agrees to only get those drugs from that doctor.

He says there is no requirement for a physician to enter that information into the electronic medical record program. Further, because that program is clinic specific, emergency room doctors don’t have access to it.

The second policy involves pharmacists. As it stands, House says a pharmacist has to do a “medication profile” when a prescription is dropped off, but not when it is picked up – even though that could be many days later, meaning there could be important information that is missing.

He believes addressing those “gaps” will go a long way in lowering rates of addiction, overdose deaths, and crime.

House says he has been advocating for the changes for several years.

He has met with NLHS officials, and while health minister Lela Evans set up a meeting with some government officials he says messages directly to Premier Tony Wakeham have gone unanswered.

He also says he has not been granted meetings with the College of Physicians and Surgeons or the College of Pharmacy.

He says that is “frustrating” because the changes are not costly or complicated, and they are standard practices in other parts of the country so he has “baffled” as to why it wouldn’t be done here.

House has been told the rollout of the CorCare program will help address the gaps – but he doesn’t see how if the requirements aren’t there.

More than 9,500 surveys were completed with people strongly in favour of a longer season – more days, and not being limited to weekends and Mondays.

Close to 60 per cent want to have the fishery open all week during the summer while, 15 per cent would prefer to see a variety of dates that includes weekdays.

About two-thirds support a higher bag limit, while one-third are satisfied with the current limits.

Nearly everyone who answered the survey indicated that they had encountered bad weather while participating in the fishery at some point.

There is no significant appetite for some type of reporting measure for the number of fish caught.

Police responded to calls about an assault on Edwards Drive around 11:00 that evening.

Police say the accused resisted their attempts to take him into custody and assaulted a number of officers.

The accused has been released on conditions to appear in court in July on three counts of assaulting a police officer and two counts of failing to comply with the conditions of a probation order.

But that was then, and this is now.

Twenty-year-old Riley White of St. Stephen’s was first charged in connection with a crash that killed his 18-year-old female passenger.

It happened in Portugal Cove South on August 18th, 2024.

The victim was thrown from the vehicle and later died in hospital, while White was saved from the burning wreck by witnesses.

Months later he was charged with being impaired, impaired causing death, and crossing a solid line.

White was released on strict conditions, but in late February he was again arrested for impaired driving.

There was a bail hearing, and White was again released on conditions.

He’s due back in court in June on the most recent charges.

The more serious case will be the subject of a three-day preliminary inquiry in September.
